Random Update Of A Huge Petro-Hunt Well In The Charlson That Just Went Over 1,000,000 Bbls -- November 11, 2019

I've followed this well for quite some time and have posted updates several times.

This page will not be updated, but I figure that a well that goes over a million bbls in the Bakken deserves a stand-alone post. In this case, note the times this well has had a jump in production.

It would be interesting to know the likely percentage of OOIP that this well is capturing.

The well:
  • 20342, 1,430, Petro-Hunt, USA 153-95-4B-9-1H, Charlson, t11/11; cum 1.026493 million bbls 9/19;
Based on data from FracFocus, this well has never been refracked.

    A "millionaire well"! Love these.

My interest in 1MM+ Bakken wells was driven by a tiff between Michael Filloon and Enno Peters (of shaleprofile.com) (For what it's worth, my politics and cornucopianism aligns more with Mike than Enno. But in terms of data and truth and analysis, it's no contest for Enno.) Mike was talking about 200+ (recent) wells over 1 MM BO and such. Was proved wrong. You can read the brouhaha here:

https://seekingalpha.com/article/4026208-bakken-update-adding-oil-glut-part-3-midland-basin-production-increases-262-percent-per-well#comment-74426032 (article paywalled, but you really don't need the article...all the action was in the comments)

Anyhow, at the time, there were (in fact) only two (hz, post 2005) wells over 1 MM bo. The monster Petrohunt and CLR wells. But ever since, then, I have wanted to track "millionaires" to see how many there were.

    1. Yes, the "successs" of the Bakken depended very much on where one stood. It appears to me the big winners in the Bakken were almost everyone except investors in publicly traded shares of companies working in the Bakken.

The list below was generated from shaleprofile.com (cumulative ranking view) manually:

    https://shaleprofile.com/2019/10/14/north-dakota-update-through-august-2019/

    rank cum operator county
    1 1.738 Petro-Hunt McKenzie
    2 1.686 Continental Resources Dunn
    3 1.294 Denbury Bowman
    4 1.287 Denbury Bowman
    5 1.165 Denbury Bowman
    6 1.146 Murex Petroleum Mountrail
    7 1.14 Denbury Bowman
    8 1.104 Whiting Mountrail
    9 1.077 EOG Mountrail
    10 1.077 Denbury Bowman
    11 1.064 EOG Mountrail
    12 1.037 EOG Mountrail
    13 1.028 Denbury Bowman
    14 1.017 Petro-Hunt McKenzie
    15 1.004 Denbury Bowman

This is based on AUG19 data. Note also that verticals are excluded. As are any hz wells before 2005. (And there are a few old verticals with over 1MM--I think even one over 2MM.) The "2005 and after start" restriction also probably excludes a few strong Red River hz wells, and/or even 1980s hz wells in the Bakken itself.

Anyhow, just looking at the list, we see we're at 15 now. So longer those two monster wells lonely by themselves. Presumably that number will grow over the years. Still far from typical. Far. Far. But fun to watch.

The two "leader wells" still seem to rise above the rest. Interesting that they have no brothers as this is different from the pattern with the Denbury and EOG millionaires, which have several MM+ wells now that are similar. There is now a second Petro-Hunt well over 1MM, but it's still way below the leader. While the CLR and PetroHunt leaders are in "good" areas, they seem to be somehow different than the norm...like a lucky hit into a large conventional pool or collected fracture or the like. They are also far from each other (not a trend).

One last leader point: the CLR "executive officer" is a much more recent well and one with a stronger current rate of production. It has also been offline more than the PetroHunt "CO" over last couple years. It seems reasonable to expect that in a year or two, the CLR well takes first place. Of course this doesn't mean CLR has the best wells. They don't--in fact, they are very close to being a good representation of the Bakken average. But I'm sure, there will be some press release when CLR takes first place. And who can fault them...they did a lot to get MT/ND production going, in the Bakken and even Red River.

Seven of the fifteen (almost half) are actually Denbury wells in the Bowman. Thus, Red River wells. Their presence makes me wonder if an older data source would show more Red River millionaires. But (unfortunately), Red River play seems to be over, other than a sporadic rig down there every now and then. So it's just kind of a ghost of Christmas past.

After the Denbury seven, we have EOG in second place with three millionaires. Petro-hunt, takes the bronze now, with two MM+ wells (just having gotten that second well, referenced in your post). Companies with a single millionaire include CLR, Murex, and Whiting.

In terms of counties, we see after the seven millionaires in Bowman, we see five in Mountrail, two in McKenzie, and one in Dunn. So some reasonable distribution within the Bakken core. Poor little Williams has no representation yet.

Looking at wells above 900,000 bopd, but below 1MM, we can see fifteen more wells on the launching pad. Within that group are an amazing ten (!) Denbury wells in the Bowman. Seeing a pattern? After that, are three EOG Mountrail wells (growing pattern). Then there is one more WLL Mountrail well. And in 30th place for cum, just over 0.9 MM bopd, there is an XOM (XTO) well in Williams county. Pretty old well (2009 start). So may take a while for XOM and Williams to join the millionaires' club.

    1. I posted on the blog some months ago that I thought 2019 would be the year when we would see a lot of wells go over 500,000 bbls. It looks like I was a bit early; it now appears 2020 will be the year that the Bakken will be known as year of 500,000-bbl wells.

Folks like me were inappropriately exuberant about the potential of the Bakken. In fact, the operators are "managing" their assets.
