Notes to the Granddaughters

This song came up randomly on my play list moments ago -- that's what slowed me down -- whenever I hear this song -- I am incredibly nostalgic -- I wear my emotions on my sleeve, as they say ...  whenever I hear this song, I think of my mom and dad in happier days, probably when we lived on 17th Street in Williston, ND, and mom and dad would go out dancing at the State Line Club eighteen miles west of town and I would be left at home in charge of my siblings, except I didn't know the word "siblings" yet. I don't think I heard that word, and certainly did not know what it meant, until 1971, when I met the "first" love of my life. I remember her using the word. I remember it as if it were yesterday.

It was at a garden party. Yes, a garden party, of all things. In New Jersey, where they held such things. We didn't hold garden parties in Williston when I was growing up.

But back to the video, before I forget.

Sunday Night British Movie Mysteries

Starting tonight a multi-episode television show, The Woman in White.

Years ago, while in England, I met an American woman perhaps twenty years my junior, a most "interesting" woman on so many levels. She worked for Army intel. She "only" graduated from high school; she did not go to college, but she talked to me about The Woman in White, as well as many other novels. Colleen said she had not gone to college but she was blessed by having an incredibly good high school literature/English teacher. I never asked her why she did not go to college. My hunch: she could not afford to go. Very, very sad. But it never held her back. Or perhaps she was bored and eager to get on with life. I don't know where she grew up.

I was reading voraciously at the time, eclectically, and had "graduated" to the great 18th and 19th century English novels. I had never heard of Henry James (The Turn of the Screw, The Beast in the Jungle). I had never heard of The Woman In White by Wilkie Collins, until then, until Colleen brought it up. Subsequently, I read it; and loved it. I've long forgotten the story. I need to read it again. Of the books I've mentioned, The Beast in the Jungle is most memorable.

From wiki:
In 2003, Robert McCrum writing for The Observer listed The Woman in White number 23 in "the top 100 greatest novels of all time", and the novel was listed at number 77 on the BBC's survey The Big Read.

Google Search Nexus

Over at the sidebar at the right I have a link to "The Salman Plan." The two most recent updates:
  • October 21, 2018: with the Khashoggi murder, hard to see where this "plan" will go.
  • August 25, 2018: the Saudi Aramco IPO is believed to be dead, but Saudi's "minister of energy" says the IPO is not dead. Okay
I suppose this is accurate: we don't know if the "IPO" is dead, but it's pretty sure a journalist is.

Yes, I know, I am repetitious with my song choices, but my "video editor" quit on me when she realized she was never going to get paid.

Slawson -- Most Interesting Innovator In The Bakken? -- October 21, 2018

I mentioned this at least once before. Slawson seemed to try a lot of different "things" in the Bakken. If I find that post, I will link it again.

Here's another example. The well:
  • 26103, 547, Slawson, Goldenban 2-2-1MLH, Sanish, t3/14; cum 222K 8/18; note that the well is still "F" -- free flowing, not on a pump -- at least according to the scout ticked (8/18); both laterals target the Three Forks; a geologist's report is not scanned into the file;
The graphic:

The fracking / completion strategy:

What about the other four wells in the graphic? Again, very, very good wells. Remember, when looking at the production data, these are short laterals, and I believe all middle Bakken wells, but I did not check:
  • 17175, 981, Slawson, Golden Eye 1-2H, Sanish, t10/09; cum 459K, flowing; not on a pump;
  • 18252, 991, Slawson, Golden Eye 2-2H, Sanish, t11/09; cum 485K, on a pump;
  • 17820, 855, Slawson, Banshee 1-1H, Sanish, t4/09; cum 499K, flowing, not on a pump;
  • 18309, 1,306, Slawson, Banshee 2-1H, Sanish, t12/09; cum 514K, on a pump;
Had these four been Three Forks wells or had #26103 been a middle Bakken well I would have expected to see a jump in production in these four wells.

"Accident Forgiveness" Is Not Available In California. Why? Voters Voted Against It In 1988

Cocktail chatter. Link here.
Accident forgiveness is an auto insurance policy term where insurers agree to not raise a policy holder's rates after causing an accident. These policies are illegal because the California voters approved proposition 103 back in 1988.
That proposition requires insurers to justify their rates while also prohibiting excessive rates.
Accident forgiveness policies just can't be justified.
The way that accident forgiveness policies work is by charging consumers a little more up front, so as to offset the future cost of not performing a rate adjustment after an accident. Under prop 103, these types of insurance policies charge an excessive rate and are not approved.

This is a map of North Dakota. What is being mapped? (See comments for readers' answers.)
    • sites of car accidents since 1910
    • honey bee farms
    • ICBM sites ("missile" sites)
    • where folks think Jimmy Hoffa is buried
    • oil wells
    • natural gas wells
    • mapping nothing; just a bunch of blue circles
    • towns in North Dakota with a population less than 15
    • convenience stores that thought they sold the winning Mega Millions ticket last week
    • locations where at least one pheasant was shot during last year's hunting season
    • licenses and unlicensed taverns in the state
    • where record low temperatures have been recorded at least once since 1889
    • record snowfall reported at least once since 1889
    • municipalities that did NOT protest against the DAPL
    • traffic-light regulated intersections
    • NDDOT traffic camera locations
    • "red light" cameras
    • North Dakota state colleges and universities
    • barns that have been blown over or are otherwise no longer functional
    • ponds and lakes -- a Ducks Unlimited map
    • wind farms: existing and proposed

    Hyperbole, Much? -- Phillips 66 -- Fitzsimmons -- October 21, 2018

    Didn't Warren Buffett own/sell a lot of shares of PSX or was it just COP? I've long forgotten.

    Disclaimer: this is not an investment site. Do not make any investment, financial, job, travel, or relationship decisions based on what you read here or think you may have read here.

    Hyperbole, much? Michael Fitzsimmons writes: "Phillips 66: the sale of the century." Summary:
    • Friday's $6.35 drop in the share price was way overdone;
    • the trigger was apparently the Trump administration's desire to ease rollout of the UN's new international maritime clean fuels standards;
    • while Phillips 66 would be a beneficiary of the new rules, they were not worth 5.8% of the company's entire market cap; and,
    • PSX is a STRONG BUY with a bullish Q3 EPS report expected Friday

    • orders for consumer durables surge 2% month-over-month; surprised analysts who expected a drop
    • Donald Trump hits 40% (remember: the consensus was his numbers would drop as other candidates dropped out and coalesced around non-Trump candidates); looks like Walker voters are going for "the Donald"
    • black shooter kills two whites; no protests; no looting; "Black Lives Matter"; Bryce wanted a race war; he got it backwards -- black on white doesn't matter; white on black will start a riot

    Nothing About The Bakken (Except Fracking Mentioned In Passing) -- October 21, 2018

    Food

    The new appetite for San Antonio. Our first Texas home was San Antonio. This is the full-page, front-page story in this week's section,"Off Duty," in The Wall Street Journal. Highlights:
    • San Antonio: 1.5 million people
    • Tex: north of the downtown
    • Mex: south of downtown
    • Tex-Mex: downtown
    • the writer visited more than 600 trattorias, bistros, steakhouses, sushi bars and craft-driven cafes
    • UNESCO: designated San Antonio as a world-wide Creative City of Gastronomy
    • Native American, Spanish, Czech, Polish, and more
    • Cured: one of the best restaurants in the Pearl; foodie scene north of San Antonio
    • Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery
    • Botika: Chinese- and Japanese-influenced food of Peru (our younger daughter's favorite cuisine)
    • Esquire Tavern: no kitchen until 2011; now, seven years later, curing their own charcuterie, making short-rib empanadas; downstairs, a cocktail speakeasy called Downstairs
    • Battalion: an Italian restaurant
    • still one of the country's best cities for tacos
    • best tacos: Carnitas Lonja, opened last year (2017)
    • Mixtli, opened in 2013 -- one seating per night; seats 12; yup, a hole in the wall -- literally
    • Five other sites to visit in San Antonio while waiting for your next Mex-Tex-Japanese-Chinese-Polish-Peruvian dinner:
    • McNay Ar Museum: we used this as our library when we lived in in San Antonio; biking distance; not quite walking distance
    • Mission San José: still holds Catholic Mass
    • San Antonio Museum of Art: superb; one of our favorites; did not visit it often enough; downtown
    • Brackenridge Park: when we lived in San Antonio, biking distance; not quite walking distance

    Memo to MsB: The Medieval Ages Are So Yesterday

    Tone deaf: someone didn't hear the bone saws; listening to Apple music? Link to WSJ: behind the scenes it is being reported that MbS "feels betrayed by the West. He said he would look elsewhere and he will never forget how people turned against him before evidence was produced."
    • winner: Putin?
    • losers: US defense firms
    Advice to Steve Mnuchin: watch your back, and stay on the yacht. From the linked WSJ article --
    The Khashoggi affair is the latest in a series of missteps that tarnished the crown prince’s reputation, including getting into a prolonged war in Yemen, imprisoning dozens of perceived dissidents and failing to carry off a planned initial public offering of Saudi Arabia’s state oil company.
    He developed “a complete intolerance for dissenting voices,” said Dennis Horak, the recently retired Canadian ambassador to Saudi Arabia, who himself was barred from the kingdom in August, after the Canadian government criticized Saudi Arabia on Twitter for jailing activists.
    In recent months, Prince Mohammed had begun appearing less in public. He has spent many nights on his yacht on the Red Sea, say people briefed on the matter, thinking it safer than his palaces.
    When your country harbored the bin Laden terrorists that flew planes into the WTC, and whisked likely co-conspirators out of the country immediately thereafter, would one think there would be so much backlash to a single murder?

    Fracking and the Big Bang

    From National Geographic.
    In 1998 scientists discovered that the universe is not only expanding but that its expansion is accelerating.
    This totally unexpected behavior has been called the "most profound problem" in physics, because our current understanding of gravity says that attractions between mass in the universe should be causing the expansion to slow down.
    The graphic:

    The amount of antimatter in the universe? Perhaps one part in a trillion. Is there an anti-universe in which matter accounts for perhaps one part in a trillion? Where did all that antimatter go? Some suggest that immediately after the Big Bang, anti-matter and matter annihilated 99% of particles, leaving 1% imbalance, that led to us today.

    But perhaps:

    And, from there, of course, it's an easy step to see multi-verses.

    • 25199, 2,928, BR, Merton 21-15MBH 2NH, North Fork, t8/16; cum 379K 8/18;
    • 25201, 3,360, BR, Merton 21-15TFH 3NH, North Fork, t8/16; cum 395K 8/18;
    Now, of the two wells running north, what well was closed to the index well, #17471, a middle Bakken well?

    The answer: #25201, a Three Forks well.

    In the year after the frack of the neighboring wells, the index well produced 174,309 bbls, well above the 20,000 bbls it produced in the previous 12 months.

    174,309 - 20,000 = 172309 bbls x $50 = $8.6 million over 12 months for a well that appears not to have been re-fracked. (It is possible the well was re-fracked; I just don't see the data that would "prove" it.)

    I Just Love Reading Anecdotes About Paul Dirac

    From The God Problem, Howard Bloom, c. 2016, p. 542:
    With his pointed chin, his high forehead, his near-Mohawk-like-shock of hair, and his intense eyes, Paul Dirac looked as if he was flying through life.
    But he was doing it quietly.
    So quietly that if he spoke two sentences during a dinner party, it was counted as a night of stunning loquacity.
    For example, there was the dinner party where Dirac was seated next to another bright man known for his silence, the celebrated E. M. Forster. It is said that Dirac and Forster both sat in utter wordlessness through the soup course. Then, just before the main course arrived, Dirac became chatty. He turnd to Forster, whose works he had read, and asked, "What happened in the cave?" He was referring to a cave that had appeared in a crucial scene in Forster's book A Passage to India. And those six syllables were Dirac's only words. Forster said nothing. But he had been listening. He was just thinking the question through. Both Forster and Dirac remained in silence through the main course. They maintained their silence until the dessert arrived. Then Forster turned to Dirac with an answer: "I do not know."
    No wonder one of London's newspapers said Dirac was "shy as a gazelle, and modest as a Victorian maid."
    Upon re-reading that, one wonders if "internally," both Forster and Dirac were running at what "we" would consider "normal" time. Is "time" relative? Is time "relative' for each of us? Or think about the time delays in interviews on television between an anchor in New York City and a talking head in Tel Aviv.

    Paul Dirac, by the way, is more commonly remembered as Paul A. M. Dirac. I wonder if he thought about his "A. M. Dirac" moniker and the moniker of E. M. Forster.
