The Wells Keep Getting Better -- June 20, 2015

Long time readers might be surprised by this well.

This well certainly is not the kind of well I would have expected in this part of the Bakken based on wells from the "early" days. Times are a'changing.

• 28457, 489, CLR, Gladys 1-20H, Rainbow, 40 stages; 8 million lbs sand/ceramic, t9/14; cum 78K 4/15; still flaring

The curve drilling proceeded well, with good build rates. Picking of the landing point was problematic, as most available type logs were more than a mile distant. The Mercer 1 - 13H appeared to be the best up hole correlative log, with spacing between peaks being very similar. However, the lowermost Lodgepole gained somewhat in thickness, while some of that was lost to the unexpectedly thinner Upper Bakken formation. Directional was able to make both necessary changes, and we landed right about the point we wished to attain.

Drilling of the lateral was problematic, with a heavy BHA that readily dropped but was troublesome to slide back up. We had good control with a hard streak just inside zone, where we were fooled by a local deflection off a local hard streak underneath the one we wished to find. The bore was significantly low before this could be corrected, bu t it was discovered in time before we had drifted overly close to the Lower Bakken Shale. While not in target, oil and gas shows in these lower strata were good, and wetness, balance, and character showed probable existence of oil. 

Gas shows: 200 - 1,000 throughout the lateral
