Two Stories On Wind And Wind Subsidies In Scotland

First, from BBC News:
Councils in Scotland have received more than 2,500 wind farm applications in the past 18 months.
The party's figures indicate the local authorities facing the greatest workload in dealing with the proposals are Aberdeenshire, Highland and Orkney.
The Conservatives said wind farms have become a "gravy train."
The Scottish government said it has given councils additional funding to deal with the applications.
The 2,508 applications represented, according to the Conservatives, seven every working day.
Now, why would energy companies be submitting, on average, seven wind applications for a wind farm every working day, you might ask?

The answer, from The Telegraph:
An analysis of the industry’s figures shows that Britain’s largest energy firms received almost $1.4 billion last year through a consumer subsidy added to household bills.
The subsidy is worth $320 million more than the income from the electricity actually produced by Britain’s on and offshore wind farms. In total, the big six received more than $2.4 billion in revenues last year from wind farms they own.
I don't have a dog in this fight. It's just fascinating to watch. And a great opportunity for investors.

Will Great Britain Be Better Prepared This Year?

Updates

October 16, 2013: The Brits are in deep trouble -- with regards to energy -- and all those windmills in the Thames Estuary won't be of much help when they freeze up. The BBC is reporting:
Two years ago (2010 - 2011/2011-2012) the UK had a buffer between energy supply and demand of 16%, but this winter that will fall to 5% and it could hit 2% by 2015, according to the National Grid and the energy regulator.

Original Post
The Express, via IceAgeNow is reporting:
Forecasters last night warned the entire country is set for a horror freeze which will bring brutal winds and fierce blizzards.
‘We are looking at a potentially paralysing winter, the worst for decades, which could at times grind the nation to a halt,” said Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services.
‘Persistent cold snaps with some very heavy snowfall are likely, and I would not be surprised if some records are not broken this year.
James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather, said it was likely to be the worst winter for more than 100 years.
“A horror winter scenario is likely to bring another big freeze with copious snow for many parts,” said Madden. “This is likely to produce major disruption to public transport and school closures on a prolific scale.”
How serious is it in Great Britain? Back on June 30, 2013, it was noted that, when talking about energy in Great Britain:
Natural gas use dropped off a cliff in 2011, dropping back to levels not seen since 1995. One can argue that the drop in oil use is due more to the "recession" than availability. I'm not going to look for the links now, but it was widely reported that Great Britain came without hours (repeat: hours) of running out of natural gas this past winter.
Everything points to a more severe winter this year in the western world. We can't say we weren't warned.

North Dakota, #2 In Business Climate; Minnesota, #47 In Tax Climate

Flashback: North Dakota moved to second place among best states to do business --  Forbes, September 13, 2013.

At that link, Minnesota was not mentioned. I was curious where our neighbor to the east ranked. Here it is. Minnesota Trucking Association is reporting:
According to the Tax Foundation, an independent, non-partisan research organization, Minnesota ranks near the bottom in business tax climate.  Minnesota ranked 47th out of the 50 states. Wyoming was deemed to have the nation’s top tax policies, while New York was ranked last.

"The states in the bottom 10 suffer from the same afflictions: complex, non-neutral taxes with comparatively high rates,” wrote the report’s authors, Scott Drenkard and Joseph Henchman.
And it looks like things are not getting better:
In the 2012 edition of the report, Minnesota ranked 45th. The report’s authors singled out the state for criticism over recent changes to tax policies, which included $2.1 billion in tax increases enacted during the most recent legislative session.
