Nineteen (19) New Permits -- The Williston Basin, North Dakota, USA -- KOG With A Nice Well; Others Off Confidential List Are Mediocre At Best

Active rigs: 185 (rising)

Nineteen (19) new permits --
  • Operators: QEP (4), HRC (4), Fidelity (3), Oasis (2), CLR (2), Emerald (2), Slawson, Whiting
  • Fields: Heart Butte (Dunn), McGregory Buttes (Dunn), Tyrone (Williams), Stanley (Mountrail), Alkali Creek (Mountrail), Foreman Butte (McKenzie), Roosevelt (Billings), Sanish (Mountrail)
  • Comments:
Wells coming off the confidential list were posted earlier; see sidebar at the right.

In a huge airport, if there is a huge line of customers at the check-in counter backed up, and there are flights getting ready to take off, the airline personnel find out which passengers need to be at the boarding gate the quickest, and bring those folks to the head of the line, to get them processed and get them their boarding passes.

Question: if the Feds were going to come in and take over permitting for BLM land, where should operators and the NDIC focus their attention for the next six months? Yup.

McGregory Buttes and Heart Butte are both entirely inside BLM-managed reservation.

  1. Can you explain this to me, please: stages, million lbs and the cum number? Thank you!

    1. Again, this is just my shorthand; the oil and gas industry is not using it.

I get the information from the well file, and although the "stages" are almost always correct; the type of frack could be wrong.

Stages: the number of stages that were fracked. 24 to 36 is pretty much the norm now for a long lateral in the Bakken; EOG is going up to 40, 50, and 60-stage fracks.

lbs: refers to the amount of proppant used in fracking (proppant is the general term for the various kinds of sand, and the various kinds of ceramics; I round the pounds to millions of pounds, so 1.1 million means 1.1 million lbs of proppant; sometimes just sand, sometimes just ceramics; sometimes both; the well files can take time to read and I won't spend much time on them, so this data could be wrong. Generally about 100,000 lbs/frack stage; though again, EOG is testing huge amounts. The usual amount of proppant for a long lateral is 4 million lbs; EOG is using as much as 10 - 12 million lbs.

CUM: is the cumulative production in 1'000's of bbls as of that indicated month and date; so "t6/12; cum 56K 7/13;" means the well was completed/tested in June, 2012; and as of July, 2013, it had produced a cumulative/total of 56,000 bbls of oil (again rounded to the nearest thousand.

I need to add this information to the explanation at this post:

    1. You are welcome. I've updated the "shorthand." I'm sure others were curious, also.
