NDIC Hearing Dockets -- November, 2012

OXY USA and Newfield are noticeably absent.

Many of the "continued" cases had to do with redefining stratigraphic limits.

Note the BR requests for 2560-acre units; some have suggested this is because of "national grasslands," i.e., the Little Missouri National Grasslands and/or Little Missouri State Park. That may be true in some cases. But it certainly looks like several of the fields (including Clear Creek, Pershing, North Creek, and Sand Creek) are outside the grasslands. In addition, in last month's hearings, CLR had requests for multiple 2560-acre unit clearly outside "protected" areas. I think the overlapping 2560-acre spacing units noted below are requested for reasons other than the grasslands.

EOG's request for six wells on a 320-acre spacing unit is a one-off.

Initial thoughts on the November dockets.

  1. Bruce, this jumped out at me, what are they doing here?

"19024, Oasis, amending Cottonwood-Bakken, i) extend the field; ii) establish 23 new 1280-acre units; iii) 8 horizontal wells in each (8x 23 --> 184 wells, Burke, Mountrail"

    1. Catching up.

Eight wells/1280-acre units is now the norm. In fact, BR is moving to 2560-acre units.

    2. By the way, by redefining the stratigraphic limits, it makes it economical to drill additional wells in some of these fields. I assume if they don't get the stratigraphic limits that the geology suggests, the operators will leave those fields for later, and/or drill fewer wells.

  2. What do the amend requests for unrestricted productiin mean? I haven't seen thar before and Hess is requesting for all their fields.

    1. You are correct; it is worded differently than what we are used to seeing. Being worded differently there may be some nuances that are different, so others can chime in to tell us if we are wrong.

North Dakota restricts flaring starting about six months after production begins. Operators need to restrict oil production if natural gas is still being flared. Waivers are given, and some have suggested the waivers are liberally given by the NDIC.

We usually see such requests on a well-by-well basis but in this case, as you noted, these were "blanket" requests. The only thing I can think of is that Hess has contracted for a certain amount of pipeline and/or rail takeaway and needs to fill those contracts.

I would assume mineral owners would be thrilled to see their wells at maximum production.

This is all conjecture. I am a layman with no "professional" background in the oil and/or gas industry.

    2. Do you know why G3 is going through the pooling process on units that have already been drilled? Do they have to do that if they drill more wells on that spacing?

    3. I will let others chime in on this. I have my thoughts, but I am just a layperson with no professional experience in the oil and gas industry. This is not unique to G3 Operating.

  3. i noticed Continental is asking for 14 wells on a 1280 spacing in Divide County. In Continentals Investor Day presentation in October, they showed a map of locations for tests of multiple three forks benches. There were two test locations in Divide County and one of them from what I could tell from their map was probably this location.

    1. 14 wells on a 1280-acre spacing unit in Divide County! To me, that's amazing. Divide County doesn't compare to the Sanish / Parshall in Mountrail, or the northeast corner of McKenzie County. So, with 14 wells on a 1280-acre unit in Divide, one can only imagine what we might see in Mountrail, Dunn, and McKenzie.
