This is Surge. They have a couple of recent nice Spearfish wells, and seeking more units. Good.

    Now Mission Canyon. Interesting.

All at the Canadian border. The also drilled Spearfish in Canada. Canadian rig company drilling for them now in ND. Another Canadian company drilled some Surge/Legacy wells recently.

They had a 3D shoot recently, too.

    Encouraging.

    1. Wow, I posted that minutes ago, and I haven't even had time to "digest" it, and you've already sent a note. Thank you. I'm impressed. It really helps for folks to point out some of the subtleties of various cases. I miss a lot and rely on readers. Thank you.

    1. I actually posted that link, the tale of two cities, a couple days ago. I wish I had a way of keeping track of all the articles I've linked along that line. But I have an idea. Thank you for sending that link -- gives me an idea for a new project.

  3. Are all of these applications approved? We had some docket cases that pertained to our mineral rights that were scheduled for this past week. Is there anyway to know if they were approved or denied? Thanks!

    1. No, these are "requests" / cases that will come before the NDIC on August 22nd and 23rd. My understanding is that you can listen to the hearings live, and that the outcome of the cases are available at the NDIC site under "Premium Services," although I am not sure about that. I do not subscribe to "Premium Services."

I post them only to force myself to go through each case, case-by-case, and by so doing, get an idea of where the Bakken is headed.

For those cases in which a company is asking to drill "x" number of wells in a given field, even if the request is approved by the NDIC, there is no assurance that the company will drill the well.

  5. Does appear that surge believes Madison/mission canyon may be a second target from the spearfish. Even tho ndic names the spearfish to be spearfish Madison, the drilling lands in the spearfish on the 15 or so wells that eog, cornthian and legacy have drilled since horiz drilling started in 2009 in bottineau Cty . Most of the older wells in thus area of ND targeted the Madison using vert drilling. These are now stripper or abandoned . Will be interesting to find out more about the mission canyon hearings as these are right in the middle of what has been for the last 3 years an attempt to establish a spearfish play. If the objective is mc, then these two wells will be slightly deeper as the spearfish overlays the Madison in this area. Also will be interesting to find out if horiz Madison is the objective. Sure seems as tho surge saw something on the seismic in mc and want a closer look.

    1. Yes, it will be interesting to see what they find in the Mission Canyon. I would have missed that, had you and "anon 1" not pointed that out. Thank you for taking time to comment. As you say, it could be very, very interesting.

  6. Hello.
We have mineral rights pertaining to case #18519. We do not live in ND, but we stay informed as much as we can about the Bakken. Thank you for all you do in regard to this web site. We have learned a lot.
Question - From what you know and understand, what's the probability of XTO energy drilling on this site any time soon. We understand no drilling occurs between Nov-Mar. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  7. 1. I wouldn't hazard a guess on how soon they will drill. There are too many variables. You can see from the dockets, they have plans for a lot of wells throughout the Bakken.

    2. Drilling goes on in North Dakota throughout the year. They will drill all twelve months of the year.

    3. At one time I blogged that EOG, I believe, did not frack between November and March; that was some time ago. I don't know if that is still true. I also don't know if other operators have that same policy.

    4. My hunch is that XTO has deep pockets and is/will be using state-of-the-art rigs on pad drilling and they will be putting in wells about as fast as anyone. How soon they complete them, and whether they frack during the winter, I do not know. Maybe a reader will be able to answer your question about XTO and tracking.

    1. Bruce,
Thank you very much. We have other mineral rights in Williston and do have one well producing that was drilled years ago.
We will continue to follow and again appreciate the loads of information to put out there on the web for us.

      Regards,

      Mark
