39 Pages of Hearing Dockets for March, 2012 -- NDIC -- and Active Rigs at Record (205)

Initial observations:
  • 7 wells on 1280-acre units is now the norm
  • BEXP is now putting 8 wells on a 1280-acre unit
  • Look at all the 2560-acre spacing units
  • Look at 14 wells on one 2560-acre unit
  • Look at 7 wells on 800-acre units
  • Look at a 2560-acre unit; 16 wells
  • Look at request for 102 new wells in one case
  • Look at request for 96 new wells in one case
  • Hess requesting permits for 468 new wells -- someone else can check my math; this was done quickly; errors possible
  • It looks like Oasis is requesting permits for 108 new wells
  • A lot of cases relate to pooling, which means drilling is soon to come

    1. This was a very, very long paragraph in the hearing dockets. I abbreviated it to:

17415, OXY USA, to commingle wells with diverse ownership; Dunn

Operators need permission to commingle oil from different wells into one battery of tanks. OXY USA is requesting that oil from several wells be allowed to be placed in the same tank(s) -- obviously this will be a battery of tanks. This will be a lot cheaper for OXY to manage. Trucks only need to go to one site to pick up oil, and when the pipeline is put in, a single pipeline to the battery of tanks instead of pipelines to multiple well sites. At least that's my understanding.

    2. You are welcome. It's quite a document isn't it ... Hess requesting as many as 468 permits/wells if I counted correctly. It just shows us how much work there is to be done.

    3. I am curious why HESS asked for only 4 wells for their land in the Ellsworth Field and 6 everywhere else. Is this due to geology, or they need/don't need as many wells to get same amount of oil out?

Also, I found HESS's aggressive schedule to be curious since in their Earnings presentation in February it looked like their plan was to put one well in each section to lock in the leases.
Which surprised me since other Oil companies were indicating it was cheaper and more efficient to drill 4+ on a pad.

Finally, curious if you have insight on why Hess would ask for so many permits at one time? Can they realistically drill these many in a year? How long does it take per "pad".

      Thanks

    4. 1. This happens occasionally. Back in December, 2009, EOG requested permits for 570 wells in one case, 11939:

      http://milliondollarway.blogspot.com/2009/11/december-17-2009-ndic-docket.html

      2. The number of wells per section is a moving (and growing) target. I assume some of this is purely limited by the manpower required to do all the paperwork to put together a permit request. Also, they won't know how many wells a spacing unit might support until they start drilling.

      3. I assume much of this is pre-emptive, to try to keep others from coming in with permit requests. The fee is nominal ($100) to renew the permits, I believe annually.

      4. But now you know why I transcribe/summarize the dockets each month. If that was not done, a lot of very interesting data would be missed by a lot of folks. To the best of my knowledge, no one else has yet commented/blogged on the incredible number of wells that operators are anticipating.

    5. I still use 30 days/well/rig to include the moving of the rig.

But they do talk about reaching TD in 20 days.

So, if an operator has 15 rigs: 500 wells/15 rigs --> That's about 30 months of inventory. Because I use 30 days, and the operators talk about 20 days, I suppose one could get the 500 well inventory down to 24 months.

I vaguely remember the one well/spacing unit comment and also thought that strange. The Bakken is well beyond one well/section thinking.

  2. I see Thursday March 29, 2012 Whiting has #17421 listed as pooling, does this mean several permits are to be taken on this date for more than 1 section. I own minerals in section 3 152 92 & section 10 152 92. Thank You for your help.

    3. You are welcome. I do it to force myself to look at every case. It's amazing how much information is there, and how much drilling is yet to be done. Whether you like the oil industry or not, it is incredible what US technology, roughnecks, truck drivers, can put together in a relatively short period of time.
