Update On Stark County Wells (North Dakota/USA)

Update

Status of permits for wells in Stark County from 2009

Original Post

Three more permits for Stark County wells were issued today, two for Fidelity and one for Oil For America. I associate Stark County with Lodgepole wells. Fidelity is a subsidiary/division of MDU.

(Note: the Lodgepole formation is part of the Madison group. The Madison group has produced the most oil in the state of North Dakota since discovery of the Williston Basin.)

So, here's where we stand with regard to Stark County, North Dakota (USA) wells (updated January 20, 2012), for a map of some of these wells, click here:

We have four that look like Bakken wells (the "H" designation means "horizontal" wells), four that might be conventional (vertical) Lodgepole wells, and four that will target the Three Forks Sanish.

The city of Dickinson is partly in T140N-96W; the Patterson oil field is on the southwest side of Dickinson, T139-96W.  The Whiting well (Froehlich 44-99TFH) is the farthest west of these six wells, just southeast of Belfield where there has been a history of conventional wells over the years, but nothing recent.

Fidelity has been relatively quiet in the Bakken, so this sudden interest in the Dickinson area is interesting. It will be fun to follow.
Update

April 28, 2011: Due to mechanical difficulties at the Obrigewitch 21-17TFH, Whiting believes that only one or two frac stages of the well’s total 16 frac stages are contributing to current production. Despite these difficulties, the Obrigewitch well was completed flowing 1,189 BOE per day. Whiting holds a 96% working interest and a 77% net revenue interest in the well.

October 1, 2010: Tyler Formation in the Dickinson area drawing interest.

  1. We have Mineral rights in Stark County, Section 8, township 137, range 98. What formation does that area fall under because I have noticed more permits going up close to that area.

    1. In the near term, most likely the Three Forks. Chesapeake has a LOC to the west (neighboring township to the west, #22223, Three Forks) and Chesapeake has a CONF in the township to the east (#21143, wildcat).

However, a bit farther out (in terms of years), my hunch is that it will be the Tyler that will be targeted. I just updated some monster Tyler wells in the general area (http://milliondollarway.blogspot.com/2009/11/monster-wells.html).

One almost gets the feeling that the oil companies know that Tyler is here, but they are still trying to define/de-risk the Three Forks in this area. The Bakken formation(s) tend to peter out at this point.

Three Forks is part of the Bakken Pool, but is a separate formation(s).

In addition, oil companies have targeted the Madison and the Birdbear in this area with no luck, but something tells me they will try the Madison again some day. If so, there could be a minimum of three pay zones if the economics work out.

    1. Yes, the updates were just for the wells that had been listed as of the date of the original post, back in 2010. I will be going back and updating all of Stark County when I get a chance, perhaps this weekend.

  3. My family owns oil and gas rights in Stark County, Township 139, North Range 97, Sections 20, 27, 29 as well as Eland Lodgepole Unit, Stadium Lodgepole and Dinsdale 1-10. Is this area going to boom or is it over for these sections?

    1. No, not by a long short.

I give a lot of grief to the Dickinson Press and to those in Dickinson who want the oil industry to go away, but it's all tongue-in-cheek, some amusement. Don't take those entries seriously.

My hunch is that it's just a matter of time, but the entire area around Dickinson will be developed. They are having a devil of a time cracking the code on the Lodgepole mounds, but if they do, it will be another game-changer. Chimney Sweep has another permit somewhere in that area targeting a Lodgepole mound.

But, no the boom is not over in the Dickinson area, by a long shot.

  4. Our family also own mineral rights in Township 137 North ( handwriting is hard to read but looks like Bange)98 West of the 5th P.M. Secion 29: SE. Is this an area that is currently being drilled.

  5. Section 29, T137N-R98W.

Far southwest corner of Stark County.

Almost no drilling in this area yet, but Chesapeake is betting big on this entire area. Cheasapeake has a permit in this township as well as a permit in the township to the east.

  6. My family owns mineral rights township 138 range 91 west. Is there anything going on around there or will there be in the near future?

  7. Anything South Belfield 15 miles or South Dickinson 10 miles, mineral rights both area's, and how long before they work there way to this area?

  8. We own 5 acres of mineral rights in Stark County, Section 04-137N-98W. Anything going on there?

    1. Unfortunately: no. Chesapeake has a well just one township to the east but it is being reported by NDIC as "DRY."

Chesapeake has a location in your township, just south of your section, but it is very unlikely that Chesapeake will drill this location based on lack of success in the past year.
