Quakers And Whittier, California -- October 15, 2024

Locator: 48592QUAKER.

Memo for self, not readers.

From wiki:

One of several books I'm reading this week:  The Quakers in America (Columbia Contemporary American Religion Series), Thomas Hamm, c. 2006.

From that book:

Perhaps one of the more famous American Quakers: James Michener. Reading his wiki entry is fascinating. Highly recommended. Connects many, many dots.

The Data Is In -- The Evidence Is Clear Cut -- Inflation: Supply And Demand -- Nothing To Do With Government Spending -- Period. Dot. -- October 16, 2024

Locator: 48590INFLATION.

Don't take that out of context.

More later.

But it's obvious.

And the "price of eggs due to inflation due to government spending" is getting tedious. Anyone who talks about the price of eggs in this context is …. shall we say, obtuse?

Housing prices: nothing to do with government spending; everything to do with supply and demand.

Same with rent.

Auto insurance? Nothing to do with government or national deficit.

More to follow.

Everything, everywhere happening all at once.

In This Economy? How Money and Markets Really Work, Kyla Scanlon, c. 2024.

Exhibit A:

October 14, 2024: avian flu -- egg-laying hens hit harder than turkeys -- now, can we move on?

October 13, 2024: Walmart: awesome. Protein at 88 cents / pound is pretty cheap source of protein. Salmon $5 for four ounces, or $20 / lb.

This is an incredible "moment" for Walmart. They love "rolling back" prices and as fast as wholesale prices are falling, Walmart is passing those savings to retail customers as fast as they can. "Our" Walmart was filled with "rollback" tags today. But frozen turkeys is what caught my eye. At 98 cents / pound, less expensive than last Thanksgiving, and now Walmart has rolled back that price to 88 cents / pound.

Note to readers:

So much happening right now. Several posts uploaded but "in progress" and may include many content and typographical errors.

Beware.

I'll work on getting the posts cleaned up and formatted correctly as the morning wears on.

Wow, it's busy, busy, busy.

The Hess EN-Cvancara wells slowed me down. Wow, what a story. And that follows reporting from the incredible MRO Robertson USA pad in Four Bears.

Also, I had to send a congratulatory note to my Schwab broker -- see SCHW.

Cramer's First Hour -- Part 2 -- October 16, 2024

Locator: 48586CRAMER.

Cramer's first hour: a mix of facts, factoids, opinions from various sources -- often not cited -- while listening to Cramer's first hour on CNBC.

Chevron (CVX): Cramer just mentioned Chevron -- says folks should go out and buy CVX. Not on my bingo card -- not even close. Wow!

Market cap: did market cap of NVDA just surpass that of AAPL?

Israel: US missile defense system (THAAD) has just arrived in Israel; will be operational "shortly."

Will it be up and going before the next strike? Is this what Netanyahu has been waiting for before launching major strike against Iran? Netanyahu has been using time wisely waiting for the missile defense system. And, oh, by the way -- US uniformed personnel operating this new missile defense system so no time needed to bring Israeli troops up to speed on operating this system. Given the little press on this suggests folks don't understand how big this new "wrinkle" is. So many story lines. One story line that is lost: completely counterbalances Kamala Harris' one-sided support for Hamas, Hezbollah, anti-Israeli Palestinians, two-state initiative.

Data centers: those LDCs already announced don't have the energy needed, and more data centers planned.

Cummins: makes the engines that back up the renewable energy supplying the data centers.

Boeing: an absolute debacle. Just a hair's breadth away from "junk status." Machinists strike is costing the company $1 billion / month. Strike at 33 days and will go into November.

Wow, that Sara Eisen is incredible. Wow, she knows her stuff.

Cramer's first hour: a mix of facts, factoids, opinions from various sources -- often not cited -- while listening to Cramer's first hour on CNBC.

Schwab (SCHW): wow -- up almost 10% in pre-market trading. Could be the biggest gainer today! Wow.

BofA, GS: nice. Both beat. "All" banks up in pre-market trading. Cold be another great day on the market.

AAPL: pre-market, wow! We'll see if it holds.

Medicare, UnitedHealth: big story, Cramer's first hour. More on this later. UNH down $65 in pre-market trading. $65!!!

More on the market cap: AAPL vs NVDA. Another big story, Cramer's first hour.

WTI: drops below $70.

RBN Energy

Monday: armed with new growth plans, Gulf of Mexico drillers endure hurricanes and more.

The Gulf of Mexico (GOM) may account for less than one-fifth of U.S. oil production but it’s a region that’s more than holding its own. Drillers plan to expand production, using advanced technologies to tap untouched reserves in deeper waters. Still, Gulf Coast output has always been at risk from severe storms, just like the onshore outlets and infrastructure on which producers depend. In today’s RBN blog, we’ll discuss highlights from our new Drill Down Report on the developments in the Gulf.

Friday: more EVs coming, but forecasts for sales growth, impact on gasoline demand vary. Archived.

There’s been a lot of speculation about whether the pace of electric vehicle (EV) adoption has slowed, with JD Power now expecting EVs to make up 9% of U.S. new-car sales in 2024, down from its earlier estimate of 12.4% but still up from 7% in 2023. The group remains bullish on EVs in the long term, expecting market share to reach 36% by 2030 and 58% by 2035. The forecast from RBN’s Refined Fuels Analytics (RFA) group forecast has been — and continues to be — more conservative than most but still anticipates EVs will reach 50% of U.S. new-car sales by the early 2040s. In today’s RBN blog, we’ll look at what drives these forecasts and the anticipated impacts on gasoline demand.

From the article: one out of five Americans is a millionaire.

I’ve seen this statement many times. I have trouble believing it. Maybe 18% of those paying Federal income taxes are millionaires but when 50% of Americans don't pay any income tax at all, it’s hard to believe almost 20% of Americans have a net worth of one million dollars or more. Next time you visit Walmart, one out of every five shoppers a millionaire?

From the linked article: “According to the Federal Reserve's 2022 survey, approximately 18% of U.S. households had at least seven figures net worth.”

Ericsson Beats — Huge Jump Year/Year — Shares Jump 7% — Thank You, ATT — October 15, 2024

Ericsson on Tuesday declared adjusted third-quarter earnings, excluding impairments, of 7.327 billion Swedish crowns ($0.7 billion), compared with 3.9 billion Swedish crowns in the same period of last year and exceeding the 5.75 billion crown mean forecast of analysts cited by Reuters.
Net sales shed 4% year-on-year to 61.8 billion Swedish crowns in the third quarter, but nevertheless surpassed analyst expectations of near 61.6 billion, according to Reuters estimates.
North America emerged as a bright spot in the sales picture, with year-on-year growth of more than 50%.

To repeat:  North America emerged as a bright spot in the sales picture, with year-on-year growth of more than 50%.

The company’s stock had edged up nearly 9% at 8:28 a.m. London time, before lightly paring gains to 7% at 8:44 a.m.
