"Drill, Baby, Drill" -- US Energy Drilling Dominance -- July 11, 2024

Locator: 48114B.

From the linked article:
A central plank of former President Donald Trump’s election campaign is that he’ll restore America’s “drill baby drill” energy policy. But new data makes it clear that the U.S. is already drilling for oil and natural gas at a record clip, and is on pace to become even more energy-dominant next year.

The country is widening its lead in oil and gas production, steadily taking market share from the old giants—Saudi Arabia and Russia in oil, and Qatar in natural gas.

Over the next year, the U.S. is on pace to keep growing production, putting the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies like Russia, in a difficult position. If those countries add more production, it’s likely to cause oil prices to fall, because oil demand growth isn’t keeping pace.

The International Energy Agency said in a report released on Thursday that U.S. production growth is the largest factor keeping oil supplies on the upswing this year. The country is expected to add 740,000 barrels of oil a day to the market this year, accounting for the bulk of the world’s net production growth.

Updates

July 12, 2024: one of two things generally happen when a supermarket closes for regulatory reasons:

  • the two things that generally happen:
    • the supermarket is closed permanently; no one steps in to buy it;
    • the supermarket is bought by a second- or third-tier supermarket chain -- a supermarket chain that cannot offer better prices because they don't have the supply chain advantage that would be needed to improve things
  • in most cases it's a lose-lose for consumers when the government tries to micro-manage the economy

The second source, who echoed that same description, said when Biden attends Cabinet meetings, they are “not free-wheeling, and pretty well-orchestrated.”

And the meetings themselves are infrequent, with one Cabinet secretary telling CNN they are uncertain of Biden’s condition because they so rarely see him. In fact, the last full Cabinet meeting took place on October 2, 2023. Sources also said Cabinet meetings during the Obama years, which Biden attended as vice president, were not pre-scripted this way.

Story Of The Day: Lego Theft Ring Broken Up -- Oregon -- July 11, 2024

From the linked article:

Police in Oregon have recovered more than 4,000 stolen Lego sets valued at over $200,000 in a massive bust following a three-month investigation, authorities said.

The seizure happened on July 3 at approximately 12:30 p.m. when authorities from the Springfield Police Department in Eugene, Oregon, served a warrant to 47-year old Ammon Henrikson, the owner of “Brick Builders,” accusing him of knowingly purchasing new and unopened Lego sets that had been stolen from other local retail stores, according to a statement from the Springfield Police Department released on Tuesday.

“In several instances, suspects stole hundreds of dollars’ worth of Lego sets and then immediately went to the Brick Builders store to exchange the stolen items for cash: most often at a fraction of their actual retail value,” authorities said in their statement announcing the bust. “When interviewed, some suspects advised that Brick Builders’ staff knew the sets had recently been stolen. Officers learned that many of the suspects were utilizing the money they received to buy and use illegal drugs.”

Partnering with loss prevention investigators from Target, Fred Meyer, Barnes & Noble and Walmart to confirm that Henrikson was purchasing sets that were stolen from them, the Springfield Police Department ended up recovering 4,153 Lego sets with a total value of more than $200,000, police said.

Average set price: $50 / set. Which seems really, really on the low side.
