Evolution

Why we alone in the universe. Link here.

Are we alone, and if so, why? So far, the search for extraterrestrial life has turned up nothing but silence—and a team of geoscientists now think they know why.

Geology. The presence of oceans, continents and plate tectonics on Earth is most likely the reason there is no evidence for advanced extraterrestrial civilizations, according to new research by the University of Texas at Dallas and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.

Published in Nature’s Scientific Reports, a new paper explores the lack of “active, communicative civilizations” and suggests a change to the Drake Equation, a formula devised by astronomer Dr. Frank Drake in 1961, which astronomers use to estimate the number of intelligent civilizations in our galaxy capable of communicating with humans. The Drake Equation is about formulating a question, but it provides no answer.

One part of the Drake Equation refers to the fraction of life-bearing planets where intelligent life emerges. The new research suggests that the necessity for large oceans, continents and plate tectonics—the latter lasting for over 500 million years—should also be taken into account.

This suggested qualifier to the Drake Equation regarding oceans, continents, and plate tectonics makes active, communicative civilizations far less likely. That's important because the Drake Equation multiplies several factors—such as the fractions of stars with planets, and planets on which life appears—to estimate the number of intelligent civilizations in our galaxy. Yet, there has been no evidence of any life beyond Earth. This is referred to as the Fermi Paradox, as suggested in 1950 by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Enrico Fermi.

The Drake Equation, say the researchers, assumes that an intelligent civilization would logically evolve on all life-bearing planets. This research suggests something else. Earth is the only planet in the solar system with plate tectonics. “It is much more common for planets to have an outer solid shell that is not fragmented, which is known as single-lid tectonics,” Stern said. “But plate tectonics is much more effective than single-lid tectonics for driving the emergence of advanced lifeforms.”

RBN Energy: US oil, gas, and NGL markets face challenges and opportunities.

Back in the early 2010s, U.S. crude oil and NGL exports were minimal and LNG exports were non-existent, but there were omens that the U.S. would soon regain its status as an energy production juggernaut. Now the U.S. is a critically important global supplier of oil, gas and NGLs, with exports crucial to managing supply and demand as infrastructure rushes to keep up and industry players simultaneously explore alternative energy possibilities.

Devon Energy To Buy Grayson Mill's Williston Assets For $5 Billion -- July 8, 2024

Locator: 48074B.

Link here

Devon said the deal, expected to close by the end of the third quarter, will add 307,000 net acres to the company’s position in the Williston Basin.

The energy producer expects its output to grow to 765,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd) from 664,000 boepd.

The acquisition helps extend Devon’s drilling inventory in the Williston Basin, Scott Hanold, analyst at RBC Capital Markets, said but added that the price seems a bit high.

 $5 billion / 307,000 acres = $16,000 (compare with $57,000 / acre in the Permian)

$5 billion / 101,000 boepd = $49,500 / boe/pd (compare with $75,000 / boepd in the Permian)

Devon is tracked here.

Grayson Mill acquired Equinor's assets in the Bakken, February 10, 2021.
