DFW Area With An RSV Outbreak Among Children -- November 10, 2023

Locator: 46019RSV.

Link here.

The story is completely coincidental. I was completely unaware.

I just got my RSV vaccination two days ago. Whoo-hoo.

It's that time of year when the cold and flu continue to spread and among children.
In North Texas, health providers say they've seen a significant increase in RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) in children.
Cook Children's said last week between October 22 and October 28, 25% of all tests at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth came back positive for RSV.
That's bout 191 out of the 764 tested. In comparison, in the first week of October, they saw about 50 cases.

Disney -- November 10, 2023

Locator: 46018DIS.

Disney really had a bad day considering that the DOW, S&P, and NASDAQ all surged.

Ticker:

From The WSJ today:

Disney is examining whether its future should include fewer television networks.

After Chief Executive Bob Iger said last summer that some of Disney’s TV networks, which include ABC, FX and National Geographic, might not be core to the company, executives set out to determine which channels have long-term value and which are expendable.

As part of the review, the company has explored potential sales and discussed putting some of its TV networks into A+E Networks, its joint venture with Hearst, according to people familiar with the matter.

Disney’s traditional TV networks were once cash cows but are suffering from viewership declines as streaming replaces the cable bundle. The company is exploring whether it can cut staff, programming and marketing costs enough to retain all of its TV networks.

Its stable of TV networks includes ABC—which airs hits such as “The Golden Bachelor”—and eight local television stations, the Disney Channel, Freeform, National Geographic and FX, home to the American Horror Story franchise.

So far, the executives’ work has identified ABC, Disney Channel and FX as the channels with the most value to Disney, people involved in the process said, because they all produce content that is popular on Disney’s streaming platforms Disney+ and Hulu. Other assets including cable networks Freeform and the National Geographic channel are less critical to Disney’s future, the review found.

Disney’s review of its traditional TV assets has identified opportunities to cut costs and improve the business, Iger said on CNBC Wednesday, suggesting it might not unload assets.

By the way, on a completely different note, an analyst said yesterday, NFL TNF is doing extremely wwell since Amazon "took over" the franchise this year. The analyst said that the Amazon model is markedly superior to ESPN's model for airing NFL games. It had to do with the way the streaming contracts were structured.

I remember the pushback I received when I suggested that Amazon would be very, very successful with the NFL TNF franchise.

The Amazon airing of TNF is quite amazing, quite unique: you can join the program / game in progress at any time and are give several choices:

  • go directly to the live presentation (what all networks do and generally only do);
  • resume the program where you last left off;
  • start the game from the beginning and start all over; and, most interesting,
  • elect for a quick review of the highlights and then begin the game in progress.

It is quite amazing.

Legacy networks cannot do that. And it takes a lot of "cloud" to be able to do that -- and Amazon has a lot of "cloud."

On another note, I've never, never "bought" movies from Amazon Prime -- until now. It's incredible. Highly recommend.

I've only bought two movies so far and it is so worth it.

Asteroid City.

Last night I bought The Great Gatsby last night. The $14.99 price has/had been brought down to $7.49.

Every Year We Hear How Bad The US Farm Crops Are Doing And Then .... At Harvest Time --- November 10, 2023

Locator: 46012FARM.

It looks like global warming is killing US agriculture, as Algore predicted.

Oh, wrong, tape. Sorry. Here's the story today.

Link here.

From the linked article:

The most widely grown US crop will total 15.234 billion bushels, the USDA said in its latest set of monthly estimates, surpassing the previous peak of 15.148 billion set in 2016.
The final tally was higher than what most analysts polled by Bloomberg expected.

Corn futures subsequently sank in Chicago trading to their lowest in almost three years.

The bumper crop can be explained in part by advances in genetically modified seeds, which have improved the resilience of corn plants. But the biggest factor by far is the fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year.

The war disrupted exports out of the Black Sea region and prompted global crop prices to surge. Farmers acted on that signal and planted more. America’s cornfields took up 10% more area than in 2022, according to the USDA report.So much for the summer of drought and extreme heat in the US that triggered early fears about crop damage. On Thursday, the Department of Agriculture made it official: This year’s corn harvest was the biggest ever.

Plentiful supplies and lower prices are welcome news for producers of poultry and biofuel, as corn is one of their biggest costs. They’re also likely to help keep a lid on food inflation, which has been moderating for months.
And, then of course, the cup is half-full. It gets tedious;
Of course, the other side of the equation means belt-tightening for growers. With the increase in supply outpacing demand, the USDA expects farmers to receive lower average prices for the season.

That’s unwelcome news for agricultural equipment manufacturers, as people are less willing to buy new tractors and other pricey machinery when crop prices are easing. CNH Industrial NV, one of the world’s biggest farm machinery makers, said earlier this week it was reducing salaried workers by 5% as demand declines for its combine harvesters.

RBN Energy: offshore wiwnd stung by project cancellations, but progress can be seen, too.

It’s been a rough few weeks for the offshore wind industry, highlighted by Ørsted’s decision to cancel two high-profile projects in the Northeast: Ocean Wind 1 and Ocean Wind 2. The industry continues to be plagued by a host of problems around inflation, the supply chain and permitting, leading some developers to write-down losses and question whether their projects remain economically viable. But it hasn’t all been bad news, as other projects have been able to move forward and hit major milestones. In today’s RBN blog, we look at the recent cancellations, some key projects that have been approved or are advancing, and what we’ll be watching for over the next several months.

Monthly Utility Bill -- November 10, 2023

Locator: 46009ELECTRICITY.

Everyone has heard:
  • how hot it was in Texas this past summer; it's coming to an end;
  • how the grid may not hold; it did! Easily.
  • how expensive Texas electricity is; say what?
    • my entire utility bill is less than what my entire Starbucks bill used to be (monthly statements)
    • no "loyalty" rewards with Green Mountain Energy, just reliable, affordable electricity.
Last month I made almost no effort to conserve electricity, and let my wife wash and dry clothes as she wanted.

My wife is like her Japanese mother: doing laundry seems to be her favorite pastime, especially las toallas. She could do las toallas all day long if we had that many.

This was our electricity bill, our entire utility bill except water which we pay with our rent. We do not have natural gas.

Note the average high temperature for the current month last year (93°F) compared to this year (97°F), and compare it to the previous month (August, 2023): 105°F.

Average daily usage: 17 kWh vs 13 kWh last year, and 18 kWh last month.

$86.71 for October, 2023 and we don't live in a cave and we don't have the IDF knocking at our door. We  have it pretty good here in the USA. Happy Veterans Day -- tomorrow. School programs yesterday and today.

Okay.
