Reality Sucks -- January 16, 2022

Oh, oh! Electricity is trending toward $300 / MW in NE ISO, the highest I've seen, I think, ever, and demand in the region is not running all that high. Link here. It almost appears natural gas, "got behind" and now  operators are scrambling to find natural gas, oil, and Canadian hydroelectricity to meet the demand. The big problem: no wind, or at least not the wind that wind farms can use.If there's a big storm, the windmills could be shut down to protect them. Renewable energy is providing only 6% of fuel mix, and of that 6%, wind it providing 25%. 0.06 x 0.25 = 1.5% of the entire fuel mix.

The Optics Don't Match The Rhetoric

Mainstream news says hospitals are unable to cope with the surge of Covid cases. Apparently cases are surging, and the White House press secretary says the nation won't meet 85% - 90% vaccinated which was the White House goal.

And then I'm watching the Tampa Bay Buccaneers playing a playoff game in their home stadium in Tampa. If Florida is not the most under-vaccinated state, everyone is doing what they can to push that narrative, and yet, here we are, the stadium is packed and no one -- not the refs, not those on the the sidelines, not the reporter, not the fans -- no one is wearing a mask.

Oh, here we go. The post-game interview with Tom Brady and the interviewer and the interviewee, both unmasked, are standing six feet apart, or so it appears. Could be five feet.

Wow, This Is Exciting! More Maps May Be Posted Today And Tomorrow! Thank You NDIC -- Janjuary 16, 2022

Halleluja! January 16, 2022

 From a reader:

DMR NDIC rolled out changes and NorthSTAR is populating all the Townships/Ranges & we have NEW WELLS!!!

Check it out: they told me at noon the changes were going in all weekend & many, many things are BACK!!!!

I’m ecstatic!!!

I got so much e-mail on Saturday, I actually missed this note. Sorry!

This is clearly the most important piece of e-mail I got except for the alert from Chase notifying me of unusual activity on my credit card. LOL. It was spam.

I can hardly wait to see Tuesday's NDIC website. Wow.

If It Weren't For Harold Hamm And Continental Resources, Would We Even Be Talking About The Bakken Any More? January 16,

Current Winter Storm: Izzy is a Doozy

Couldn't resist

New England

The interior Northeast up through New England is expected to get hit with 6 to 18 inches of snow. Coastal areas of the Northeast, including Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City and Boston, could see up to 3 inches of snow, though that will likely get washed away as the snow changes to rain by early Monday.

Wind chills Sunday morning will be in the single digits from Philadelphia to New York City to Boston and dip below zero in northern New England.

Texas

Strong, gusty winds are also a concern across a large swath of the South, with wind alerts in effect from Texas to the Carolinas, with the concern for isolated power outages and wind damage.

Dakotas

A winter storm watch also is in effect from Arkansas to Pennsylvania for a much-anticipated winter storm that's already dumped more than a foot of snow across North Dakota and Iowa.

The NE ISO Saga Continues; Today Wind Is Huge Issue -- January 16, 2022

Wind is now providing 0.6% of electricity demand. 0.6%. That's less than one percent.

Finally, this story is all over twitter. I guess folks are starting to read the blog. LOL.

And, here:

Criminal on two levels:

  • burning oil for electricity: that's something only Saudi Arabia and third world countries do; and,
  • in the process, sky-high prices for their residents -- especially the poor.

Of course, this will all be "made up" when we get back to nice weather.

Link here.

Most surprising, wind:

  • yesterday, of the renewable sources, wind account for 59% of supply;
  • today, of the renewable source, wind is accounting for only 7% of supply.
  • have operators stopped turning turbines due to severe weather storm?

From a reader:

You are correct in noting the (lack of) wind contributing to $275/$280 per Mwh spot pricing early this morning.
Specifically, the wind produced almost 1,000 Mw last night at 7 PM (local time).
At noon, output was 71 Megawatts ... a drop of over 900 Megawatts. This is nearly the output of one nuclear plant. This large wind drop off is not at all an unusual event.

The fact that the temperature was below 10 degrees meant very little natural gas was available for electricity generation.
(Natural gas: the offshore FSRU continues to regasify Trinidadian LNG and inject it into the pipeline system.)

Burning expensive fuel oil (over 3,600 Mw at one point) is the result.
