Background Leading Up to the Sorenson 29-32 1H

Updates

June 16, 2012: It's a long complicated story below. Bottom line: BEXP won, Hess loss. BEXP has two long laterals in the spacing unit; the two permits that were issued to Hess were canceled.

Original Post
Some months ago I posted a long post with updates regarding some interesting activity among producers/operators/drillers in the Alger field.  Below, I have reprinted that post. It's a long post; some of it may be wrong, and it is a bit disjointed, but now that I've read it again, I think it's pretty accurate.   That post was about the Sorenson 29-32 1H (BEXP), that BEXP later reported to set a new record in the Bakken for initial flowback: 5,133 boepd.

Over the weekend, BEXP announced that the Sorenson 29-32 1H well has apparently set the record for initial flow back: 5,133 boepd. That's an incredible number. The NDIC has it about 3,000 bopd.

Here's the original, somewhat amateurish post (I've learned a lot since that posting). The reason for posting this is to provide a bit of background that has otherwise been lost to history regarding the Sorenson 29-32.

Original post (amateurish and much of it wrong):

UPDATE: Hold onto your hats. This case has gotten a lot more complicated. NDIC has scheduled a hearing on Feb 26, 2010, to hear Hess' plea to suspend/revoke BEXP's permit to drill. BEXP already has a rig on this site. This should be interesting. February 6, 2010.]

[UPDATE, February 9, 2010: Nabors Rig 52 started drilling the Sorenson 29-32 1-H on this date, Feb 9, 2010.]

[UPDATE, February 25, 2010: recommendation to dismiss Hess's request. If being read correctly, this suggests three laterals in one section!]

BACKGROUND:

The following was posted on/before February 4. The story is not over (see update above.)

This is more complicated than my usual posts, and I could be wrong in my understanding of what is going on. But if I understand this correctly, two different producers ("oil companies") have been granted permits to drill three different wells in the very same 1280 acre area in the fairly prolific Alger oil field.  It's possible they are going to different formations (such as the Bakken AND/OR the Three Forks Sanish).

Operators/producers are starting to request permits to start drilling "infill" wells. These are wells in established fields placed in between wells that are already producing.

One would assume that if the two "outside" wells were operated by "Producer A," then the infill wells would be operated by the same "Producer A."

This appears to be the new wrinkle: it looks like two operators/producers are requesting infill wells in the very same section(s).

Here is an example:

Brigham Oil (BEXP) already has producing wells in the surrounding sections in the area under discussion.

Today, Feb 4, 2010, after receiving a permit earlier to do this, BEXP [Producer A] is moving a rig to place a long lateral in sections 29 and 32 in T155N-92W.  That rig is MIRU (moving in, rigging up).

[Language: NABORS 52 BRIGHAM OIL & GAS LP SORENSON 29-32 1-H NWNE 29-155N-92W MTL 18654 * MIRU] See NDIC active rig page (this is an ever-changing page; if you access it 30 days from now, it may not show up any more).

Meanwhile, on the same date, today, Feb 4, 2010, Hess [Producer B] was granted two permits to drill from the south, again a long lateral targeting the same sections (29 and 32) in the same township.  [Language: #18685 - HESS CORPORATION, RS-PANZER FARMS-155-92- 3229H-1, SWSE 32-155N-92W, MOUNTRAIL CO., 360' FSL and 2515' FEL, DEVELOPMENT, ALGER, 20337', 9-5/8 " - 2500', 2333' Ground, API #33-061-01259, (Approved: 2/3/2010]

[Language: #18686 - HESS CORPORATION, RS-PANZER FARMS-155-92- 3229H-3, SESW 32-155N-92W, MOUNTRAIL CO., 360' FSL and 2765' FEL, DEVELOPMENT, ALGER, 20354', 9-5/8 " - 2500', 2333' Ground, API #33-061-01260, (Approved: 2/3/2010)]

So, "producer A," BEXP, has moved oil rig Nabors 52 on to section 29 (the northwest quadrant), to drill a long lateral in sections 29 and 32; and, "producer B," Hess, was granted a permit to drill two wells targeting the same two sections but coming from the south, drilling in the southern half of section 32 and extending into section 29.

5,133 boepd!

BEXP announces record initial production: 5,133 boepd for the Sorenson 29-32 1H.  This is permit #18654, in the Ross project area, in the increasingly exciting Alger oil field, which was one of the first fields I highlighted some weeks ago due to this excitement. For those who were concerned that BEXP had "given away" all their interests to stay afloat, BEXP has a 95% working interest in this well. This was a long lateral with 27 frac stages.
  • 18654, 4,335, Statoil/BEXP, Sorenson 29-32 1H, Alger, t4/10, cum 394K 9/14;

It's Only Make Believe, Conway Twitty -- yeah, it's only make believe, 5, 133 boepd

The NDIC reported this well at 2,944 bopd last week and I have that posted on my initial high rates page.

Something tells me the BEXP/CEO had trouble sleeping last night waiting for the announcement to be released.

Oil is at a solid $85 this morning, and "talking heads" say oil will be at $90 by summer, nearing $100 by end of year, based on global recovery led by China.

From the press release:
Brigham Exploration Company (NASDAQ: BEXP) announced updated production performance on the Sorenson 29-32 #1H. Subsequent to drilling out frac plugs, the Sorenson produced at an early 24 hour peak flow back rate of 5,133 (4,335 barrels of oil and 4.79 MMcf) barrels of oil equivalent per day, which, based on publicly reported data available to the Company, represents an apparent record production rate for the over 2,700 horizontal wells in the Williston Basin. The Sorenson is located in Brigham's Ross project area in Mountrail County, North Dakota and is a long lateral completed with 27 frac stages, perf and plug and ceramic proppant. Brigham maintains an approximate 95% working interest in the Sorenson. Based on this updated production performance, Brigham has completed five long lateral high frac stage wells in Ross with an average early 24 hour peak flow back rate of approximately 2,980 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
