Another Bakken-Related Start-Up in Belle Fourche, South Dakota Area

Construction is under way on a plant near the northwestern South Dakota city of Belle Fourche that will make fiberglass tanks and other products for the North Dakota and Montana oil fields.
The company: Black Hills Fiberglass.

At start-up: about two dozen workers; could double in the near term.

This is the second company to announce new Bakken-related activity in the Belle Fourche area. Very, very interesting. Wonderful.

    I'd be interested to learn how they arrived at Belle Fourche as a location for this business. Any word?

      Location, location, location.

      First of all, rule out North Dakota for new upstarts like this: too expensive -- land and salaries/wages. And diminishing work force.

      Then, if you eliminate North Dakota, but want to participate in the Bakken, in the US you have Wyoming, South Dakota, and Montana. (Minnesota does not even enter the discussion -- as anti-business as this state is. Sorry.)

      WY, SD, and MT, all equally good except for one thing (and I've blogged about it before). What highway runs directly from Texas to Williston? US 85. Belle Fourche is right on US-85. I've blogged about the incredible number of trucks already going through Belle Fourche on a daily basis.

      By the way, for as long as I remember growing up in North Dakota, there has been a group of folks working on making US-85 a four-lane divided highway from Texas to North Dakota.

      Rapid City might make more sense in terms of size of city, but it's farther from the Bakken and I assume costs are higher there, also, compared to Belle Fourche.

      Two reasons they chose Belle. (1) One of the founders if from Belle. (2) Belle is a one day truck haul from many oil producing States: CO, NE, WY, MT, ND, & SD.

      Interesting about the found/Belle Fourche connection. But the centrality of Belle Fourche is very, very interesting.

      Another ground breaking for a pipe manufacturing company in Belle yesterday. I believe their products serve the oil/gas industry too. About 40 jobs.
