Six (6) New Permits -- Is Northeast of Minot Going to Start Getting Active? -- The Bakken, North Dakota, USA

Updates

February 15, 2012: Ballard has a rig on site:
  • 22051, ROS, Ballard Petroleum Backes 23-4, wildcat, just west of the Glenburn oil field, north of Minot, North Dakota;
Original Post
Daily activity report, January 6, 2012:

Operators: Zenergy, CLR, BR, Ballard Petroleum Holdings, Denbury Onshore, and GMX Resources

Fields: Siverston, Rattlesnake Point, Little Knife

Ballard Petroleum Holdings has a wildcat near the Glenburn oil field north east of Minot; probably targeting the Madison formation

GMX Resources has a wildcat in Billings County.

There are two interesting operator transfers reported today:
Two wells were released from "tight hole" status; both were completed, including this one:
  • 19967, 809, Whiting, Talkington 21-30TFH, Stark County
Under the "very strange" category, six producing wells were completed (three EOG wells; three WLL wells) and not one of them reported an IP. Very strange.

  1. Hi,
I asked you a question last month about temporary spacing on our spacing unit. You directed me to the Bakken Shale discussion site which prove successful. Just tonight we received an email from the group that included the following link. It is a way to look up a well any where in the USA to determine fracing details, components, dates depths etc. We were excited to see our well that is in confidential status was fracked October 24... Very exciting new to get at this late hour ... Will be off confidential in 3 weeks anyway.. But we are out of state and we weren't sure if at had been completed.

You may be aware of the link... If not here it is

  2. Thank you for reminding me of that resource/link.

I am well aware of the site but I had forgotten that it could be used for the purpose you noted: to find out if a well had been fracked.

I understand that information getting to the site might be a bit delayed, based on comments over at the Shale Discussion Group.

Thank you for sending me this note. I will remind folks of the site with a stand-alone post.

  3. Hoping you would do that for others...interesting information. We love your blog. My wife and I are planning a trip back to North Dakota this summer after school is out to see everything that is going on in Williams and see relatives. It has been many years since we last visited. We live in the Pacific Northwest now...Road trip!
Thank you for all you do.

    Recommendations:

    1. Stop at the Cenex at West 2nd Street at 6:00 a.m.

    2. Drive to the industrial parks west of Williston.

    3. Visit the new BHI supersite.

    4. Take a drive to Watford City.

    5. Have lunch at the little cafe in Alexander.

    6. Go west of Williston and see if you can see the new ONEOK natural gas gathering and processing facilities (2) under construction. Be there at 6: 00 p.m. to watch change of shift.

  5. I checked the GIS map in the area Ballard Petroluem has a permit to drill in Ward County near Glenburn oil field. All previous wells drilled in this area were dry holes. Ballard must think there is more oil in the Madison formation or with the price of oil, they will take a risk. I own mineral acres about 7 miles from the northren part of the Glenburn oil field. Not much leasing in my area but a friend that owns land about 1.5 miles from my land leased to Ballard Petroluem----so I am hoping that Ballard and other companies will have some success with the Madison formation.

  6. Wow! Thanks for the information...yes we know booking is an issue so we will do that well in advance...we are excited to be going back there.
If you happened to be in the area at the time of our trip we would love to have lunch and chat it up with you. That's always hard to plan but you never know sometimes timing works out.

  7. It's absolutely amazing. You get just a mile outside of the Glenburn oil field in almost any direction and every hole dry. But the Glenburn oil field all 12 sections or so, is a very good Madison field.

  8. By the way, with the amount of office buildings and industrial sites serving oil and oil service companies in Minot, my hunch is "they" know more than we can even imagine.

Of course, the Spearfish to the north; another look at the Madison; and, then, almost six months ago, now, I was told that may even be some "Bakken streams" in the area.

  9. Yes, it's possible I could be back in the Bakken this summer. Lunch would be great.
